TVOC (TVOC)
Total Volatile Organic Compounds
Complex mixture of organic chemicals off-gassing from building materials, furnishings, and cleaners.
What is TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds)?
Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) refer to a broad group of carbon-based chemical vapors that readily evaporate at room temperature. Common indoor sources include paints, synthetic carpets, adhesives, cleaning disinfectants, and office electronics. Prolonged exposure causes Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), dizziness, and respiratory irritation.
- •Paints, varnishes, wood stains, and chemical sealants
- •Engineered wood furnishings, adhesives, and foam upholstery
- •Chemical solvents, aerosol disinfectants, and air fresheners
- •Printers, photocopiers, and newly unboxed IT hardware
- •Petrochemical refining and fuel evaporative emissions
- •Industrial coating and chemical processing plants
Health Effects of TVOC
- •Headaches, dizziness, nausea, and cognitive disorientation
- •Eye irritation, dry cough, and nasal congestion
- •Allergic skin reactions and chemical odor distress
- •Damage to liver, kidneys, and central nervous system
- •Chronic sensory irritation and exacerbated respiratory allergies
- •Increased long-term carcinogenic risk associated with specific fractions (e.g., benzene)
Concentration Levels & Safety Guidelines
Standardized thresholds to identify when active ventilation and air filtration intervention is required.
Excellent indoor air quality with no noticeable chemical off-gassing.
Noticeable odors in newly furnished rooms; increased ventilation recommended.
Headaches and sensory discomfort probable; activate activated-carbon purification.
Intolerable chemical vapor concentration; immediate area ventilation required.
| Organization | Guideline Limit | Exposure Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| German Federal Environmental Agency | < 0.3 mg/m³ | Level 1 (Target) |
| WELL Building Standard | < 500 µg/m³ | Indoor Threshold |
| LEED v4 IAQ | < 500 µg/m³ | Pre-occupancy Flush Target |
How DLE Measures TVOC
Heated micro-hotplate metal oxide structures react with reducing and oxidizing volatile gas molecules, altering electrical conductivity mapped to calibrated isobutylene equivalent concentrations.
High-micropore activated carbon filters that adsorb volatile organic compounds.
